Clarification Request for Additional Information Docket No. 72-1040 Certificate of Compliance No. 1040 Amendment No. 4 to the HI-STORM UMAX Canister Storage System Chapter 1 - General Information 1-1 The Staff was concerned that the addition of the words neutron shield cylinder added a new component to the system.

Holtec intended this change to be editorial and did not intend to add a new component to the system. Holtec will withdraw this proposed change as part of Amendment 4 to the HI-STORM UMAX CoC.

Chapter 6 - Shielding Evaluation 6-1 The staff expressed concern about the values of the dose rates in CoC Appendix A section 5.3.4.a The dose limits in 5.3.4.a of the CoC Appendix A are revised to be 90 mrem/hr for the standard lid and 30 mrem/hr for the Version B lid. The proposed limits are approximately 1.5 times the dose rate reported in the FSAR.

6-4 The Staff requested additional information on the tolerances for the Version B lid.

At the request of the NRC staff, Holtec is providing information on the manufacturing tolerances that are contained on Holtec fabrication drawings. For fabrication of the HI-STORM UMAX Version B lid:

The standard ASME Section II tolerances apply to STK (STOCK) dimensions.

The following tables apply for all other tolerances.

These tolerances are controlled in manufacturing under Holtecs NRC approved QA program.

The manufacturing drawings including these tolerances are similarly controlled, and any changes are evaluated under Holtecs process, which includes any necessary reviews by technical disciplines (i.e., shielding) and licensing.
