UNITED STATES NUCLEAR REGULATORY COMMISSION WASHINGTON, D.C. 20555-0001 February 27, 2018 Mr. James J. Hutto Regulatory Affairs Director Southern Nuclear 40 Inverness Center Parkway Post Office Box 1295 Birmingham, AL 35242

SUBJECT:

REQUEST FOR ADDITIONAL INFORMATION FOR REVIEW OF SOUTHERN NUCLEAR OPERATING COMPANYS DECOMMISSIONING FUNDING PLAN UPDATES FOR JOSEPH M. FARLEY, UNITS 1 AND 2; EDWIN I. HATCH, UNITS 1 AND 2; AND VOGTLE ELECTRIC GENERATING PLANT, UNITS 1 AND 2 INDEPENDENT SPENT FUEL STORAGE INSTALLATIONS

Dear Mr. Hutto:

By letter dated March 30, 2017, Southern Nuclear Operating Company (SNC) submitted, for U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) staff review and approval, decommissioning funding plan updates (DFP Updates) for the independent spent fuel storage installations (ISFSIs) at Joseph M. Farley Nuclear Plant, Units 1 and 2; Edwin I. Hatch Nuclear Plant, Units 1 and 2; and Vogtle Electric Generating Plant, Units 1 and 2 (Agencywide Documents Access and Management System Accession No. ML17089A520). The NRC staff reviewed SNCs DFP updates for each ISFSI and believes SNCs submittal was not sufficient to meet the intent of the requirement in Title 10 of the Code of Federal Regulations (10 CFR) 72.30(c). The DFP updates do not provide sufficient information to allow the NRC to determine that the events listed in 10 CFR 72.30(c)(1)-(4) have been specifically considered.

The NRC staff need the information identified in the enclosure to this letter. We request that you provide this information within forty-five (45) working day of the date of this letter. Inform us at your earliest convenience, but no later than two (2) weeks prior to the due date, if you are not able to provide the information by that date. To assist us in re-scheduling your review, you should include a new proposed submittal date and the reasons for the delay. Discussion of the request for additional information (RAI) and RAI response date occurred January 31, 2018 by e-mail.

In future correspondence related to this request, please reference CAC No. 001028, Docket Number, and EPID listed in the table.
