UNITED STATES NUCLEAR REGULATORY COMMISSION WASHINGTON, D.C. 20555-0001 May 17, 2018 Mr. Edward D. Schrull Fleet Licensing Manager Tennessee Valley Authority 1101 Market Street Chattanooga, Tennessee 37402

SUBJECT:

REQUEST FOR ADDITIONAL INFORMATION REGARDING TENNESSEE VALLEY AUTHORITYS DECOMMISSIONING FUNDING PLAN UPDATE FOR BROWNS FERRY AND SEQUOYAH INDEPENDENT SPENT FUEL STORAGE INSTALLATIONS

Dear Mr. Schrull:

By letter dated December 17, 2015, Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) submitted, for U.S.

Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) staff review and approval, a decommissioning funding plan update (DFP update) for the independent spent fuel storage installation at Browns Ferry and Sequoyah (Agencywide Documents Access and Management System Accession No. ML15352A046). The NRC staff reviewed TVAs DFP update and believes TVAs submittal was not sufficient to meet the intent of the requirement in Title 10 of the Code of Federal Regulations (10 CFR) 72.30(c). Specifically, the DFP updates do not provide sufficient information to allow the NRC to determine that the events listed in 10 CFR 72.30(c)(1)-(4) have been considered.

The NRC staff need the information identified in the enclosure to this letter. We request that you provide this information within forty-five (45) working day of the date of this letter. Inform us at your earliest convenience, but no later than 2 weeks prior to the due date, if you are not able to provide the information by that date. To assist us in re-scheduling your review, you should include a new proposed submittal date and the reasons for the delay. Discussion of the request for additional information (RAI) and RAI response date occurred on May 14, 2018.

E. Schrull The staff is available to clarify these questions, and if necessary to meet and discuss your proposed responses. If you have any questions regarding this matter, please contact me by e-mail at pamela.longmire@nrc.gov.

Sincerely,
