Dear Dr. Grace:

On August 14, 1986, CP&L notified the NRC (Mr. L. Mellen) of a potentially reportable item per the provisions of 10CFR50.55(e).

The NRC was informed that Hylomar Thread Sealant, which has been used in stainless steel applications, was found to exceed acceptable chloride limits.

Testing to determine the effcets of Hylcmar Thread Scalant is currently underway at our Harris Energy & Environmental Center laboratories. This testing is required to properly evaluate the potential for stress cracking of stainless steel exposed to Hylomar Sealant due to its high concentration of chlorides.

Upon completica of the testing and evaluation of the results, CP&L will be able to determine reportability on this item. It is projected that CP&L will report to the NRC on the reportability determination of this item by September 26, 1986.
