Dear Sir,

On September 30, 1988, System Energy Resources. Inc. notified the Commission of a potential safety hazard at the Grand Gulf Nuc.'. ear -

Station, Unit 1, according to the requiremente of 10CFR21. The nature of the defect concerns the left intercooler inlet adapter on their standby diesel engine generator. The subject adapter is nanufactured by IMO Delaval Inc. and provided as a part of the dieeel engine.

This letter is wr.i' ten as a follow-t.p to the System Energy Resources letter to inform the Commission of other sites where similar equipment is installed and of IMO Delaval's recormended corrective action.

It is anticipated that specific information will be available no later than October 15, 1988. In the interim, we recommend that site personnel include a periodic irspection of the left intake manifold drain as a part of their operating plan. As the Jacket water system le pressurized at all times, any leaking tubes will be evidenced by a flow of water out of the intake manifold drain. This periodic inspection should also verify that the subject drain is clear and free from obstruction.
