SUBJECT:

CONFORMANCE TO REGULATORY GUIDE 1.97 (TAC NOS. 51117, 51118 Enclosed is the NRC staff's safety evaluation related to confomance of the Peach Bottom Atomic Power Station (PBAPS) to the provisions of Regulatory Guide 1.97, Revision 3. The evaluation is based on review by an NRC Contractor, EG&G Idaho, Inc. The EG&G Idaho, Inc. Technical Evaluation Report is attached to the enclosed evaluation. <

Based on this review, the NRC staff concludes that the PBAPS complies with the recomendations of RG 1.97, Revision 3 except for instrumentation associated with monitoring of the variables neutron flux and containment isolation valve position. It is the staff's position that the licensee shall install and have operational instrumentation to monitor the subject variables which meet the recommendations of RG 1.97, Revision 3.

We request that, upon your assessment of this evaluation, you provide an estimate of the schedule for achieving implementation of any necessary changes. Should you have questions on this issue, particularly the neutron flux monitoring and seismic qualification aspects of the issue, please feel free to contact us.
