  • ,A COMMENTS ON EQUIPMENT QUALIFICATION 3 BEAVER VALLEY UNIT 2 (SER Confimatory Issue No.14) i i

I During the period of November 18 through November 20, 1986 the NRC staff and its .

consultants from EG8G Idaho audited the equipment qualification files of Beaver '

V:lley Unit 2. The staff and its consultants audited a total of 10 files, and all files were for equipment located in a potentially harsh environment. As a result of the audit, the following are observations and coments made by the staff and its consultants at an exit interview held at the Beaver Valley Unit 2 site on

. November 20,19R6.

As a result of the audit it was discovered that qualification of equipment for submergence inside containment and qualification of equipment for spray and submergence outside containment was not always cle9rly demonstrated (e.g.,

files 2BV-24, 2BV-92, 001/ESE 42A, 2BV-312 and 2BV-635). Therefore, the entire program should be reviewed to identify all instances where qualification for submergence and spray is required, and all files should be updated as necessary

to clearly demonstrate qualification for submergence and spray. .

The following comments are specific to individual EQ files as indicated. However, the applicant must update all files to incorporate these comments where applicable.

4

! Barton Pressure Transmitter, File No. 001/ESF-01 A Cable to transmitter is not qualified for superheat. However, alternate indica-tion will be used for the superheat event. Applicant comitted to update the 1

R.G. 1.97 submittal to reflect this condition.

ASCO solenoid valve File No. 001/HE-02/5 i

Maintenance procedure does not include a replacement schedule for gaskets and

' seals. While this is not a recomendation by the Westinghouse test report, the applicant agreed to incorporate an inspection schedule that will determine if a i replacement schedule should be developed. The applicant suggested that it may l also be appropriate to adapt the Unit 1 maintenance procedures to the Unit 2 ASCO

solenoid valves. The staff finds this approach acceptable.

Borg Warner Valve Actuator, File No. 2BV-92 4

This file did not adequately address the specified spray requirement.  !

{ In addition to the EQ files noted above, the following were also audited.

RDF Corp. RTD, File No. 001/ESE-06 Minco RTD, File No. 001/ESE-42A 4

Conox Connector, File No. 001/HE-08 Westinghouse Pump Motor, File No. 2BV-24

! Limitorque Actuator, File No. 2RV-67 1

Okonite 600V Power Cable and Splice, File Nos. 2BV-312 and 2RV-312 (9318) i Level Indicator by Fluid Components Inc., File No. 2BV-635 1

Our evaluation of the applicants EQ program including the results of the audit will be provided in a future SER supplement.
