June 7,1989 Docket No. 50-334-50-412 Mr. J. D. Sieber, Vice President Nuclear Group Duquesne Light Company Post Office Box 4 Shippingport, Pennsylvania 15077

Dear Mr. Sieber:

SUBJECT:

REQUEST FOR SUPPORT DURING SITE TOUR AT BEAVER VALLEY (TAC 72383)

The purpose of this letter is to confirm our plan to conduct a site tour on June 14, 1989, as part of our efforts to better understand the phenomenon of hydrogen gas accumulation in the charging pump suction piping. This phenomenon was addressed by Mr. T.P. Noonan in his letter to the NRC, dated May 16, 1989.

It was also the subject of our Information Notice 88-23 and Supplement 1.

Specifically, we are interested in observing your use of the clear plastic model mentioned in Mr. Noonan's letter, and holding a discussion with knowledgeable persons at the site.

The following NRC employees will participate (letter in parentheses indicates the person's clearance): Kulin Desai (L), Robert Jones (L), Wayne Lanning (Q),

Rich Lobel (L) and Roger Woodruff (L). Please ensure that they have access to site areas of interest. After matters regarding hydrogen gas accumulation are completed, these persons plan to tour various parts of the plant while accompanied by photo-badged NRC personnel. We will work with Mr. K. Grada on the details.

Sincerely, b oce(
