SUBJECT:

BVPS-2 EQUIPMENT QUALIFICATION PROGRAM A meeting was held with Duquesne Light Company (DLC) on Monday, December 19, 1983 at NRC Headquarters in Bethesda, Maryland. DLC was accompanied by representatives of Stone and Webster Engineering Corporation. The NRC was represented by the Division of Licensing and the Division of Engineering. A list of attendees is included as Enclosure 1.

The purpose of the meeting was the discuss DLC's Equipment Qualifications Program. The technical reviews associated with the environmental qualifications of both the electrical and mechanical equipment were discussed. DLC presented their position on Regulatory Guide 1.89,

" Qualification of Class 1E Equipment for Nuclear Power Plants." The position, dated September 22, 1983, states that Class 1E equipment presently delivered or on order will meet or exceed the intent of IEEE 323, 1971 and Category II of NUREG-0588, Rev. 1. When determined possible by DLC, the qualification of this equipment will be upgraded to meet the standards set forth in Category I of NUREG-0588, Rev. 1. Replacement safety related electrical equipment will meet the standards set forth in 10 CFR 50.49 unless there are sound reasons to the contrary as outlined in proposed Rev. I to Regulatory Guide 1.89, dated May 1983.

DLC is scheduled to have 85% of their electrical equipment environmentally qualified and installed in the March-June 1985 time frame.
