| | A routine radiological safety inspection was conducted by R. L. Nimitz on |
| | April 14-17, 1986 of your Pilgrim Nuclear Power Station. The findings of the |
| | inspection were discussed with Mr. C. J. Mai.his and other members of your |
| | staff. |
| | The inspection covered previous findings, the Radiological Improvement Plan,- |
| | , |
| | ' |
| | radiological controls for the unplanned outage, a review of the adequacy of |
| | your response to the post-accident sampling and analysis inspection, and plant |
| | radiation exposure summaries. |
| | No violations were identified. However, deficiencies were identified in the |
| | area of high radiation area access control. THe deficiencies are described in |
| | the enclosed report and involve less than adequate procedure guidance for |
| | access to and control of such areas. Additional attention to this area is |
| | needed. A weakness was also identified in the area of maintenance of |
| | emergency breathing apparatus qualifications for reactor operations personnel. |
| | Your staff has initiated action to review and address these matters. |

Subject: Inspection Report No. 50-293/86-16
A routine radiological safety inspection was conducted by R. L. Nimitz on
April 14-17, 1986 of your Pilgrim Nuclear Power Station. The findings of the
inspection were discussed with Mr. C. J. Mai.his and other members of your
staff.
The inspection covered previous findings, the Radiological Improvement Plan,-
,
'
radiological controls for the unplanned outage, a review of the adequacy of
your response to the post-accident sampling and analysis inspection, and plant
radiation exposure summaries.
No violations were identified. However, deficiencies were identified in the
area of high radiation area access control. THe deficiencies are described in
the enclosed report and involve less than adequate procedure guidance for
access to and control of such areas. Additional attention to this area is
needed. A weakness was also identified in the area of maintenance of
emergency breathing apparatus qualifications for reactor operations personnel.
Your staff has initiated action to review and address these matters.
