June 7,1989 Docket No. 50-293 l
Mr. Ralph G. Bird Senior Vice President - Nuclear Boston Edison Company Pilgrim Nuclear Power Station RFD#1, Rocky Hill Road Plymouth, Massachusetts 02360
Dear Mr. Bird:
SUBJECT:
RESPONSE TO GENERIC LETTER 87-02, VERIFICATION OF SEISMIC ADEQUACY OF MECHANICAL AND ELECTRICAL EQUIPMENT IN OPERATING REACTORS, UNRESOLVED SAFETY ISSUE (USI) A-46
REFERENCE:
TAC Number 69471 Generic Letter (GL) 87-02 provides a generic procedure for verifying the seismic adequacy of mechanical and electrical equipment. The GL requested that those utilities participating in a generic program identify the utility group and provide a schedule for completion of its effort.
By letter dated October 11, 1988, you responded to GL 87-02 and provided your schedule for initial implementation of the seismic verification program at the Pilgrim Nuclear Power Station.
You further indicated that Boston Edison Company is a member of the Seismic Qualification Utility Group (SQUG). The NRC issued a Safety Evaluation dated July 29, 1988, for the Generic Implementa-tion Procedure (GIP) developed by SQUG which identified several technical and licensing issues which needed resolution.
You have indicated your implementation schedule is contingent upon resolution and approval of the GIP developed by SQUG. Therefore, we are closing TAC Number 69471. A new TAC number will be opened for the Pilgrim facility when the GIP is approved and you submit your program and schedule for our review.
This completes our effort under TAC No. 69471.
Sincerely, Original Signed by:
