This refers to the routine safety inspection (50-293/90-13) conducted by Messrs.
J. Macdonald, A. Cerne, W. Olsen, Mrs. C. Carpenter, and Mr. A. Finkel of this
office on May 1 to June 11, 1990 at the Pilgrim Nuclear Power Station, Plymouth,
,
Massachusetts. Areas examined during this inspection are described in the NRC
Region ! Inspection Report which is enclosed with this letter.
In Section 3.0 of the enclosed report, several initiatives of your plant staff
,
are described which are intended to provide improved controls over access to'
i
'
radiation areas and reduced sources of radiation, thereby reducing personnel
radiation exposure.
These actions are worthy of note and will be monitored for
effectiveness during future routine facility inspections.

During a review of maintenance and testing activities, the inspectors noted
repetitive failures of the diesel driven fire pump over the past eighteen

months. These concerns are discussed in Section 4.0 of the enclosed report and
warrant increased manacement attention.
