This letter confirms the telephone conversation between Mr. J. ti. Hinds of this office and Mr. M. S. Turbak of your staff on August 3,1988, regarding -
a Confirmatory Action Letter (CAL-RIII-88-17-1) issued on July 12, 1988, for Zion Unit 2. This CAL concerned back leakage through Auxiiiary Feedwater (AFW) check valves evidenced by elevated motor driven AFW pump casing temperature for the 28 and 2C AFW pumps at Zion Unit 2. We have reviewed your submittals in response to the CAL and find your corrective actions acceptable with one exception. We understand that your safety analysis of thermal stress (Item 4) will be submitted to the NRC by August 12, 1988.
Therefore, I concur with your decision to continue operations without repairing Valve 2 FW 0069 until the next Unit 2 refueling outage scheduled for mid-October 1988, and CAL-RIII-88-17-1 is considered closed.
