Chattanooga, TN 37402-2801 Gentlemen:

SUBJECT: REPORT NOS. 50-327/87-08 AND 50-328/87-08 Thank you for your response of May 15, 1987, to our Notices of Violation and Deviation, issued on April 10, 1987, concerning activities conducted at your Sequoyah facility. We have evaluated your response and found that it meets the requirements of 10 CFR 2.201. We will examine the implementation of your ,

corrective actions during future inspections, j Although, you did not deny Deviation 327,328/87-08-01 in your response, you'

did provide new information concerning the routine preventive maintenance of  :

the Condensate Demineralized Waste Evaporator (CDWE) system, as well as  !

indicating that a section in the body of the NRC inspection report itself was

'

not accurat The statement referred to was that a proposed FSAR change would i

" eliminate the requirement for preventi.ve maintenance in this section of the FSAR". The intent of this statement was to reference the requirement in the - '

FSAR to manuals" perform

preventive maintenance This requirement was eliminated" described in 4 in Revision manufacturer's instruction of the FSAR and was replaced with the statement," preventive maintenance is performed on equiament ,

as determined to be required by the plant maintenance organization. T1e 3 determination will be based on experience, consideration of the equipment's importance to safe operation of the plant, and history of equipment failure."

In response, we simply point out that you have subsequently determined that the equipment is not important to the safe operation of the unit, tracking and trending of raw maintenance data (work requests) has not been actively pursued for the CDWE system, and there is no objective evidence available that indi-cates industry experience was used in the initial development or maintenance of procedures and administrative controls for the CDWE syste We appreciate your cooperation in this matte
