'provided information:on 'the_ ATWS mitigation : systems ~ for Sequoyah in submittals cated February 17, 1987,:and August 23'and October 25, 1988.'

We have reviewed your..!submittals. ' We conclude that the ATWS' mitigation system forfeach unit is-acceptable a~nd:is in compliance with the. requirements in

The details of our evaluation are

The staff is presently revjewing ATWS requirements to determine to what extent:

technical' specifications are appropriate. Acco?dingly, this aspect of the staff review remains open pending.the results of this review.. The staff.will

. provide guida'nce regarding the technical specification requirements for the-x T

. ATWS mitigation system for each unit at'a later date.

In ' our lettWdated July 6,1988, you stated the schedule for completing the -

y modifications-for the ATWS mitigation systems is the Cycle 4-refueling outage for each unit. This is the Spring of-1990 for Unit I and the Fall of 1990 for Unit.2. By te:ephosie call on August 21, 1989, it was confimed that the schedule remains the Cycle 4 refueling outage for each unit.

This schedule is the second refueling outage for each unit since July 26,1984 and.1s, therefore, acceptable because it'is~ consistent with the implementation requirements in~

10 CFR 50.62(d),

d'

.You are requested to inform the Comission, in writing, of any significant changes-in the aDove schedule and when the ATWS mitigation system for each

. unit is operational.

You may do this through the periodic updates of the Commission's Safety Information Management System (SIMS) Plant Data Report for Sequoyah.
