Dear Mr. Keppler:

This is to confirm a report made by our Mr. B.A. Svensson, Assistant Plant Manager, to your Mr. E.R. Swanson, NRC Region III Resident Inspector at the Donald C. Cook Nuclear Plant on Septarber 27, 1983, at 0922 hours0.0107 days <br />0.256 hours <br />0.00152 weeks <br />3.50821e-4 months <br />. At this time Mr. Swanson was advised that resulting in personnel error in a sanpling process, a sanple valve on the Unit 2 Boron Injection Tank was found in the partially open position which allowed a quantity of boric acid solution to drain out of the Boron Injection Tank.

Preliminary investigation indicates that approximately 600 gallons of boric acid solution leaked out via this flow path over an 8.5 hour5.787037e-5 days <br />0.00139 hours <br />8.267196e-6 weeks <br />1.9025e-6 months <br /> period ( l.2 gpn flow calculated. Upon discovery of this condition, all necessary actions were perfonned to bring the Boron Injection Tank back into specification.

Tnis incident is being reported due to the possible degradation of the BIT and its ability to supply boric acid to the Reactor Coolant System in the event of a safety injection. We have referred this event to our Corporate Office for a safety evaluation.

As required by Technical Specification 6.9.1.12, a follou.ip report will be sutxnitted within 14 days.
