Donald C. Cook Nuclear Plant Unit No. 1 Docket No. 50-315 License No. DPR-58 STEAM GENERATOR PORV RADIATION MONITOR Mr. James G. Keppler, Regional Director U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission Region III 799 Roosevelt Road Glen Ellyn, IL 60137
Dear Mr. Keppler:
This'information is being transmitted to you in accordance with our leLter AEP:NRC:0678N, dated August 8, 1985. Steam generator PORV radiation monitor MRA-1701, in Unit 1, failed to a high alam status at 10:40 a.m. on October 29, 1985, while the unit was in Mode 3.
The monitor was restored to operable status on November 13, 1985 at 1:28 p.m.
Throughout this period of inoperability, an alternative method of monitoring was available for use in the event of an accident.
The failure of MRA-1701 was due to a defective detector. While troubleshooting MRA-1701, a similar problem occurred on a second detector, MRA-1702.
Replacing the detectors restored the systems to operable status.
Procedural checks of both monitors were perfonned to ensure satisfact.ory operation prior to declaring them operable on November 13, 1985.
This document has been prepared following Corporate procedures which incorporate a reasonable set of controls to insure its accuracy and completeness prior to signature by the undersigned.
Very truly yours,
/
M. P. Alexich Vice President I
