This'information is being transmitted to you in accordance with our I leLter AEP:NRC:0678N, dated August 8, 1985. Steam generator PORV radiation l
monitor MRA-1701, in Unit 1, failed to a high alam status at 10:40 a.m. on October 29, 1985, while the unit was in Mode 3. The monitor was restored to operable status on November 13, 1985 at 1:28 p.m. Throughout this period of inoperability, an alternative method of monitoring was available for use in the event of an accident.
The failure of MRA-1701 was due to a defective detector. While troubleshooting MRA-1701, a similar problem occurred on a second detector, MRA-1702. Replacing the detectors restored the systems to operable status. .
Procedural checks of both monitors were perfonned to ensure satisfact.ory l' operation prior to declaring them operable on November 13, 1985.
