50-29/85-98 This refers to the SALP for the Yankee Nuclear Power Station, conducted by this office on December 4,1986 and discussed with you and your staff at a meeting on January 6, 1987. The list of meeting attendees is attached as Enclosure 1. The NRC Region I SALP Report is provided as Enclosure 2 and covers the period February 1, 1985 through October 6, 1986. Your response dated January 14, 1987, submitted l

pursuant to our letter of December 30, 1986, confirmed receipt of the SALP Report and did not request changes to the report content. These letters are provided as Enclosures 3 and 4.

Our overall assessment of' activities at your facility during the assessment period is that your performance reflected a commitment to quality operations, with a con-sistent and strong orientation towards nuclear safety. Because of your continuing record of superior performance, the Yankee Nuclear Power Station has been selected for reduced level of inspection effort by NRC Region I specialists.

No reply to this letter is required. We believe our meeting with you and the re-sulting interchange of information were beneficial and improved mutual understand-ing of your activities and our regulatory program.
