Dear Mr. Farrar:

SUBJECT:

HIGH ENERGY LINE BREAKS-IN THE AUXILIARY STEAM AND STEAM GENERATOR BLOWDOWN SYSTEMS - BYRON /BRAIDWOOD By letter dated May 17, 1985, you advised us that_ postulated high energy line breaks in either the Auxiliary-Steam (AS). System or the Steam Generator Blowdown (SD) System at Byron /Braidwood would have a greater effect on environmental con-ditions than originally predicted. By letter dated August 2, 1985, you described modifications that would mitigate the effects of these breaks. Subsequent letters dated August 23, 1985, December 11, 1985 and April 29, 1986 provided additional information. We have completed our review and conclude that the designs of the AS and SD systems for protection against postulated piping failures in the Auxiliary I- Building are acceptable and meet the requirements of GDC-4 with respect to accommodating the effects of postulated pipe ruptures.

Enclosure 1 is our Safety Evaluation of the systems aspects of the design.

Enclosure 2 is our Safety Evaluation of the. electrical aspects of the design.

Sincerely, Steven A. Varga, Director Project Directorate #3 Division of PWR Licensing-A i
