Dear Mr. Sieber:

EJordan

SUBJECT:

BEAVER VALLEY UNITS 1 AND 2 - GENERIC LETTER 83-28 ITEM 4.5.3, REACTOR TRIP SYSTEM FUNCTIONAL TESTING (TAC 53962 AND 62958)

By letters dated November 4,1983 and May 31, 1985, you provided information to address the subject issue for Unit 1. By letters dated March 30, 1984 and May 7,1987 you similarly provided information to address the subject issue for Unit 2.

We have reviewed responses provided by all utilities and find that existing intervals for on-line functional testing are consistent with achieving high availability for the reactor trip system. The enclosed generic safety evaluation documents our review findings. Item 4.5.3 is considered closed for Beaver Valley Units 1 & 2. Furthermore, since no changes need be made to existing functional testing intervals, the subject issue is considered fully implemented at both units.

Please note that we have earlier issued safety evaluations en a related issue. Item 4.5.2, for both units (letter dated January 12, 1987 for Unit 1 and NUREG-1057, Supplement 4 for Unit 2).

Since rely.
