Dear Mr. Robinson:

I am replying to your letter of June 14, 1976, requesting an evaluation of the acceptability of "in situ" gamma spectral measurements in lieu of laboratory soil and sediment analysis for the analysis of long-term accumulation of airborne radioactivity in soil. The program that you propose fulfills the criteria for such an analysis in an Operational Radiological Environmental Monitoring Program (cf reference "f" to Table 2 of Regulatory Guide 4.8) and is an acceptable substitute for satisfying the garraa isotopic requirement. Of course, strontium-90 l-will not be detected by this method, so that soil sampling will not be IT eliminated if the Technical Specifications require this analysis.  !

Sincerely, Cricisej gig,,g g y Karl R. Goller, Assistant Director ,

Dear Iir. Robi s.):

I am replying to your letter f June 14, 1976, relating to the acceptability of "in situ" garma spectral /casurements of long-term accumulation of radic-ac .ivity in soil. It is our opf eion that the program you propose would be cor.pletely acceptable as a/ substitute for laboratory analyses of soil provid- M ing the detection capabilf ties listed in Table 3 of Regulatory Guide'4.8 are Oc t. .
