Dear Mr. Kingsley:

D. Hagan Suhiect: UNDERGROUND SPILL OF SULFURIC ACID, GRAND GULF STATION, UNIT 1 (GGNS-1)

By letter dated April 18, 1986, the licensee (Mississippi Power A Light Company prior to December 20, 1986, and Systems Energy Resources, Inc. after that date) provided a description of a sulfuric acid spill which occurred at Grand Gulf Nuclear Station, Unit 1, to the Mississippi Department of Natural Resources, with a copy to the Nuclear Regulatory Connission (NRC). This letter discussed the initial assessment of the spill, control measures being taken, and cleanup and disposal operations. By letter dated February 18, 1987, the NRC staff requested additional information. By letter dated March 19, 1987, the licensee submitted to NRC a response to the NRC staff's request for additional information.

The NPC staff has reviewed the licensee's submittals. The staff's safety evaluation report is enclosed. The staff concludes that the spill has not posed a threat to plant safety, and that the proper measures are being taken to monitor and cleanup the spill. Further, the spill has not posed a threat to nearby drinking water and the Mississippi Department of Natural Resources (the NPDES permitting authority) has been apprised of the situation and has had coordinating personnel on site.

Sincerely, lester L. Kintner, Project Manager Pro.iect Directorate 11-2 Division of Reactor Projects I/II
