A By letter. dated May 24,1988, Sistems Energy Resources, Inc., (the licensee) l requested relief from certain requirements in Section XI of the'ASME Code-Jrelated to' the Inservice Inspection (ISI) Program for the Grand Gulf Nuclear
-Station,: Unit 1 < (GCNS-1) (Relief, Request Nos. I-00007- (Rev.1),1-00010 -
(Rev.:2)'and I-00019). By, letter dated January 30, 1989, the licensee also' i
requested relief from the requirements for ISI of the containment spray system
. (Request No. :1-00020) and for materials used in repairs and replacements, as' 4
defined in Section XI of the ASME Code (Relief Request No. RR-00001, Rev. 0).

- The staff's evaluation of.the relief requests in the' May 24, 1988 submittal is-provided by this letter.
Relief Request I-00020 was withdrawn by the licensee's q
letter dated. July 19, 1989. The evaluation of Relief Request No. RR-00001 will be provided separately.
The NRC staff has evaluated the determinations made by the licensee in support
. of the GGNS-1 ISI Program reliefirequests in the May 24, 1988 submittal. The
. staff's Safety Evaluation is enclosed. The staff has concluded that the requested relief is appropriate.
In reaching this' conclusion, the staff has
' determined.that the inspection-and testing requirements are impractical and, pursuantfto 10 CFR 50.55a(g)(6)(i), that the granting of the relief requested i

is authorized by law, wil1 not endanger life or property or the common defense and security, and is otherwise in the public interest.
?n making this deter-mination, the staff has given. due consideration-to the bitrden that could result if those requirements were imposed on your facility.
