UNDERGROUND SPILL OF SULFURIC ACID REQUEST FOR ADDITIONAL INFORMATION An April 18, 1986 letter from the licensee to the Mississippi Department of Natural Resources described a sulfuric acid spill at GGNS.
In June 1986, we received additional informal information from the licensee regarding excavation to be done to assess any possible degradation of underground process piping.
In order to complete our review, provide responses to the following questions.
1.
Have the cleanup or acid recovery operations been completed? If not, what is the present status and schedule for completion?
2.
Has any corrosion, or potential for later degradation, to safety-related piping or piping important to safety (such as fire mains) been identified?
3.
Has any threat to drinking water off-site been discovered as a possible result of this spill? If so, what is being done to eliminate this threat?
4.
What precautions have been taken or are being taken to prevent another similar occurrence?
