Dear Mr. Kingsley:
SUBJECT:
GRAND GULF, UNIT 1, INTRAPLANT COMMUNICATIONS SYSTEMS By letter dated January 10, 1986, Mississippi Power & Light Company stated that the licensee had completed testing of intraplant communication systems.
These systems provide communication between the control room and plant areas from which plant personnel may need to communicate with control room operators to mitigate the consequences of an event and attain a safe plant shutdown. The submittal also stated that communications from two plant areas (the fire water pumphouse and the diesel generator buildings) were inadequate. An interim means of communication in the areas, use of portable VHF radios, was proposed and a design change for these two areas was initiated. This submittal was made in accordance with the requirements of License Condition 2.C.(24).
The NRC staff is reviewing the January 10, 1986 submittal and finds that additional information is needed to complete its review.
Provide a description of the tests, a sumary of the test results and conclusions. Provide also, a d m ription and installation date of changes to the communications system in the fire water pumphouse and the diesel generator buildings. The staff finds that the proposed use of UHF radios for these two areas is adequate as an interim means of communication.
In order to meet the schedule for review of this licensing action you are requested to provide this information by April 30, 1986.
If you cannot meet this date, please advise the NRC Project Manager, L. L. Kintner within 7 days of receipt of this letter.
The reporting and/or recordkeeping requirements contained in this letter affect fewer than ten respondents; therefore, OMB clearance is not required under P.L.96-511.
