W. Fowler 2 UNITED STATES NUCLEAR REGULATORY COMMISSION WASHINGTON, D.C. 20555-0001 December 21, 2021 Mr. Wren Fowler Director, Licensing, Engineering NAC International 3930 East Jones Bridge Road, Suite 200 Norcross, GA 30092

SUBJECT:

REQUEST FOR ADDITIONAL INFORMATION FOR THE TECHNICAL REVIEW OF THE APPLICATION FOR RENEWAL OF THE CERTIFICATE OF COMPLIANCE NO. 1015 (CAC/EPID NOS. 001028/L-2020-RNW-0031)

Dear Mr. Fowler:

By letter dated October 13, 2020, (Agencywide Documents Access and Management System (ADAMS) Accession No. ML20293A102), NAC International (NAC) submitted an application for renewal of Certificate of Compliance (CoC) No. 1015 for the NAC Universal Multipurpose Systems (NAC-UMS). In my letter dated, March 25, 2021, I acknowledged acceptance of your application for a detailed technical review and provided a proposed schedule for the U.S.

Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) review (ADAMS Accession No. ML21060B298).

In connection with the NRC staffs technical review, we need the information identified in the enclosed request for additional information (RAI) for the NAC-UMS. During the review, staff also identified areas where the RAI is also applicable to the NAC-Multi-Purpose Canister (NAC-MPC). We request that you provide this information by February 11, 2022. Inform us at your earliest convenience, but no later than January 28, 2022, if you are not able to provide the information by that date. To assist us in rescheduling your review, you should include a new proposed submittal date and the reasons for the delay. Also, as noted in the proprietary determination letter (ADAMS Accession No. ML20328A129), we agreed it would be beneficial to provide a high-level summary of the findings and conclusions made in Enclosure 6, Appendix E 30013-R-01, Maine Yankee NAC-UMS System Pre-Application Inspection Report, Rev. 0. This summary can be provided in the next update or supplement to the certificate of compliance renewal application. Provided the RAI responses are adequate and received in the timeframe noted above, NRC expects to complete the technical reviews for the NAC-MPC and NAC-UMS in August and September 2022, respectively.

W. Fowler 2 Please reference Docket No. 72-1015 and CAC/EPID No. 001028/L-2020-RNW-0031 for the NAC-UMS (Docket No. 72-1025 for the NAC-MPC) in future correspondence related to this request. The NRC staff is available to clarify these questions, and if necessary, to meet and discuss your proposed responses. If you have any questions regarding this matter, please contact me at (301) 415-6293 or at Christopher.Markley@nrc.gov.

Sincerely, Christopher T. Markley, Systems Performance Analyst Storage and Transportation Licensing Branch Division of Fuel Management Office of Nuclear Material Safety and Safeguards Docket No. 72-1015 CAC No. 001028 EPID No. L-2020-RNW-0031
