t Docket No.: 50-382 AUG 7 1985 Mr. R. S. Leddick Louisiana Power and Light Company 317 Baronne Street, Mail Unit 17 New Orleans, Louisiana 70160

Dear Mr. Leddick:

SUBJECT:

CONFIRMATORY EVALUATIONS OF C0ATINGS INSIDE CONTAINMENT In NUREG - 0787, Supplement 10, the staff resolved allegations A-256 and A-271 concerning unqualified paints inside containment at Waterford 3, pending confirmatory evaluations by the Louisiana Power and Light Company (LP&L), that debris generated as a result of a design-basis accident will not adversely affect the performance of post-accident fluid systems.

By letter dated April 25, 1985, LP&L provided information to demonstrate that the confirmatory evaluations were completed. The staff has reviewed the evaluations and concludes that, although the licensee's methodology and assumptions were not in all cases fully supported, the staff was able to confirm through independent evaluation the conclusion that post-accident fluid systems will not be affected by failure of unqualified paints. Therefore, the staff considers that Allegations A-256 and A-271 are fully resolved and the comfirmatory item closed.

If you have any questions, contact the NRC Project Manager, J. H. Wilson, at (301)492-7702.

Sincerely, JS!
