As part of our ongoing negotiations regarding the inspection of the RWCU piping in accordance with Generic Letter 88-01, Georgia Power Company (GPC) forwarded a letter dated June 16, 1989, with proposed criteria for sample expansion for the RWCU welds. The NRC st'aff has had several telephone conversations with your representatives during the past few weeks to discuss this matter. During a telephone conference call on July 19, 1989, we agreed that rather than attempt to settle on a set of criteria at this time for sample expansion, we would take a different approach to the problem. It was agreed that GPC will examine the first seven welds (a 10% sample) as identified in your June 16, 1989 letter. You will then discuss the findings with the NRC staff and we will determine at that time whether sample expansion is necessary and what, if any, additional actions are warranted. It was also agreed that the examination of the first seven welds will be completed during the early part of the outage such that there would be time to accomplish additional inspections, if warranted, without . impacting the plant restart schedule.

During the same conference call on July 19, we also discussed the matter of calibration blocks to be used for the ultrasonic inspection (UT) activities.

You previously had asked for relief to allow use of existing calibration blocks rather than modify the existing blocks and/or procure replacement blocks to meet the current ASME Code Section XI requirements. It was agreed that in view of the short time left before the start of the Unit 2 outage, the NRC will allow use of the existing calibration blocks for UT in~ spection during this outage. Your representatives agreed that GPC would take necessary action Q901 8907260237 R 890724 ADOCK 0500032; PDC
