Dear Mr. Sumner:
. By letter de*ed Decembeg 23,1998, you proposed to conduct the Generic Letter (GL) 88-01 examinatia i on the sched sie described in your third 10-year interval inservice inspection f'
program. These examinations would entail inspection of all weld overlays over the 10-year inspection interval with one-third of the overlays being inspected within a 40-month period (essentially overy other refueling outage), rather than 100 percent being inspected every other refueling outage. These inspections (one-third of the total) were performed at Hatch Unit 1 during the last refueling outage and no degradation was found. In addition, during the Hatch Unit 1 spring 1999 outage, you plan to inspect approximately twelve weld overlays that have not
(
been exr. mined three times since the weld overlay was applied.

f
-letter dated January 7,1999, you provided a summary of that conference call.
Since most of the overlays have been examined three times with no evidence of degradation i
and Hatch Unit 1 operates within the Electric Power Research Institute Water Chemistry
< Guidelint,s and with hydrogen water chemistry, the staff concludes that your proposed GL'88-01 examinations for the spring 1999 refueling outage at Hatch Unit 1 are acceptable.
I Sincerely,
