Dear Mr. Sumner:

On October 7,1997, the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) issued Generic Letter (GL) 97-04," Assurance of Net Positive Suction Head for Emergency Core Cooling and Containment Heat Removal Pumps," to all holders of operating licenses or construction permits.

The NRC issued GL 97-04 to confirm the adequacy of the net positive suction head (NPSH) available for emergency core cooling (including core spray and decay heat removal) and containment heat removal pumps under all design-basis accident scenarios.

In response to GL 97-04, you provided letters dated October 28 and December 30,1997, and July 6 and July 31,1998, for Edwin I. Hatch Nuclear Plant (Hatch), Unit 1. These submittals provided the information requested by GL 97-04 and requested by the staff during its review of the Hatch extended power uprate amendment request. The staff has reviewed your responses and has concluded that all requested information has been provided; therefore, we consider GL 97-04 closed for Hatch Unit 1. GL 97-04 for Hatch Unit 2 was closed by the staff by letter dated June 17,1998. The staff's Safety Evaluation, dated October 22,1998, that supported the issuance of the extended power uprate amendment provides additional discussion of this issue.
