APR 0 4 W Ms. Lynn Cunningham The Times-Picayune Publishing Corporation 3800 Howard Avenue IN RESPONSE REFER New Orleans, LA 70140 TO F01A-84-297

Dear Ms. Cunningham:

This is in response to your letter dated April 17, 1984, in which you requested, pursuant to the Freedom of Information Act (F0IA), all documentation requested and produced by the NRC Office of Investigations (01) review of quality assur-ance at the Waterford 3 nuclear power plant at Taft, Louisiana.

As Joseph Cawley explained during a March 27, 1985, telephone conversation with you, 01 does not review quality assurance issues. When 01 staff interviewed allegers who made certain allegations that pertained to safety issues, those matters were referred to other NRC staff for appropriate action. On April 2, 1984, the staff undertook an intensive review to resolve issues in order to reach a licensing decision on Waterford Unit 3. Among other things, in September, 1984, the staff published a supplemental safety evaluation report NUREG-0787, Supplement No. 7. Shortly thereafter, the staff began to review records related to that report which were subject to other related F0IA requests (F01A-84-506, F0!A-84-507, F0!A-84-455, F0!A-84-426, and F01A-84-449). We have enclosed with this letter copies of response letters to those F0IA requests and lists of records which were recently released to the public by the NRC. These records are available at the NRC Public Document Room (PDR), 1717 H Street, NW, Washington, DC 20555, and are filed under the F0IA request numbers indicated on the enclosed response letters and list pages. We have also enclosed a notice that explains how to obtain documents from the PDR.

If you have any questions concerning the matters discussed above, please contact Joseph Cawley at 301-492-4269.

This completes NRC action on your request.
