SUBJECT:

GRAND GULF UNIT 1 DRYWELL VACUUM BREAKER POSITION SWITCHES

Dear Mr. Richard:

By letter dated May 24, 1985, the Mississippi Power and Light Company provided a description of the design and functioning of position switches for drywell vacuum breaker check valves. These position switches are required by Grand Gulf Unit 1 License Condition 2.C.(35) to be installed prior to startup following the first refueling outage.

The enclosed safety evaluation describes staff's review of the May 24, 1985, submittal. The licensee plans to install single proximity type position switches on each of six vacuum breaker check valves with separate position indication and a common annunciator in the control room. These position switches are used to assure that check valves are closed during normal operation and they are, therefore, environmentally qualified for normal plant operation. Position switches on motor operated valves in each line are environmentally qualified for loss of coolant accident conditions. The staff concludes that the design of the position switches for drywell vacuum breaker check valves as proposed in licensee's May 24, 1985 letter is acceptable.

Sincerely,

/S/

Thomas M. Novak, Assistant Director for Licensing Division of Licensing
