Dear Mr. Kingsley:

SUBJECT:

OPERABILITY / RELIABILITY OF EMERGENCY DIESEL GENERATORS MANUFACTURED BY TRANSAMERICA DELAVAL, INC.

Enclosed is the NRC staff's generic safety evaluation report (SER) of the Transamerica Delaval, Inc. (TDI) Owners' Group program to validate and upgrade, as necessary, the design and manufacturing quality of the TDI diesel generators for nuclear standby service. The staff has concluded that implementation of the maintenance / surveillance programs identified in the SER will provide an acceptable technical resolutian of the concerns regarding reliability of TDI diesel generators for service at nuclear plants, following the crankshaft failure at the Shoreham nuclear plant.

Please provide your plans for implementation of the programs identified in the enclosed SER for Grand Gulf, Unit 1. In order to meet the schedule for this licensing action, you are requested to provide this information by July 15, 1986. If you cannot meet this date, please advise me within seven days of receipt of this letter.

The reporting and/or recordkeeping requirements contained in this letter affect fewer than ten respondents; therefore, OMB clearance is not required under P.L.96-511.

Sincerely, Lester L. Kintner, Project Manager BWR Project Directorate #4 Division of BWR Licensing
