Dear Mr. Kingsley:

SUBJECT:

TEST SCHEDULE FOR TYPE A CONTAINMENT LEAKAGE RATE TESTS Re: Grand Gulf Nuc' ear Station (GGNS), Unit 1 By letter dated February 28, 1986 Mississippi Power & Light Company submitted a summary technical report entitled " Primary Reactor Containment Integrated Leakage Rate Test" which gave the results of the Grand Gulf Unit I containment leakage Type A test conducted in accordance with requirements in Appendix J to 10 CFR 50. The initial Type A test did not meet the acceptance criteria of Appendix J. The sources of leakage were identified and isolated and the retest of the containment was successfully completed. Paragraph III.A.6(a) of Appendix J requires that if a Type A test fails, the licensee must submit a schedule for subsequent Type A tests to the NRC for review and approval.

In its February 28, 1986 letter, the licensee proposed that the schedule for subsequent Type A tests remain as currently specified in the GGNS Unit 1 Technical Specifications.

The NRC staff has reviewed the licensee's February 28, 1986 submittal. The staff's safety evaluation is enclosed. The staff concludes that the Type A containment leakage test results as adjusted and stated in the summary tech-nical report are acceptable. The staff further concludes that retaining the present schedule for subsequent Type A containment leakage tests is acceptable.
