Getitlemen:

This refers to the routine safety inspection conducted by Mr. W. J. Slawinskt

of this office on October 24-28, 1988, of activities at Big Rock Point Nuclear

Plant authorized by NRC Operating License No. DPR-6 and to the discussion of

our findings with Mr. T. W. Elward and others of your staff at the conclusion

of the inspection on October 28, 1988.

The enclosed copy of our inspection report identifies areas examined during the

inspection. Within these avsas, the inspection consisted of a selective

examinatten of procedures and representative records, observations, independent

measurements, and interviews with personnel.

While no violations of NRC requirements were identified during the course of

the inspection, one weakness was identified concerning overreliance on

historical radiological ha:ards associated with a work activity when ,

determining radiological protective measures. This weakness is addressed in '

Section 9 of the enclosed inspection report. We request that you inform us,

in writing, within 30 days of the date of this letter, of your corrective

.i actions for the apparent weakness.

In accordance with 10 CFR 2.'<90 of the Commission's regulations, a copy of this

letter, the enclosed inspectior, report, and your response to th % letter will

be placed in the NRC Public Document Room.
