(3) Correspondence dated September 14, 1983 S. L. Daltroff, Philadelphia Electric Company, to D. G. Eisenhut, NRC

Dear Mr. Eisehnut:

This letter and its attachment provides additional information regarding the implementation of NUREG-0737, Item II.B.2, Plant Shielding, at the Peach Bottom Atomic Power Station. Reference (3) described our plans to provide additional shielding to limit the dose to personnel situated at the Health Physics - Operational Support Center (OSC) during the postulated accident. Subsequently, the NRC staff, by telephone, requested 83112103B2 831110 PDR ADOCK 05000277 PDR h)\

Mr. John F. Stolz Page 2 that interim or compensatory measures be taken to limit the potential dose level until the planned modifications are completed.

In response to this request, we are submitting a recently revised Peach Bottom procedure (EP-202, Rev. 5) that specifies, in Appendix EP-202-6, protective measures to be taken in the event tho OSC is not habitable due to high radiation levels. These measures involve relocating health physics personnel to the HP of fice on the second floor of the vendor building, as described in step 2 of " Precautions" (page 1), step 3.5 in "Immediate Action" (page 2), and Appendix EP-202-6 (page

9) of the procedure. The recently constructed vendor building provides of fice and shop f acilities primarily for the maintenance contractor. It is a permanent two-story building and is readily accessible from the power block (approximately 150 feet north of the power block). The procedural controls will provide adequate compensatory measures until such time additional shielding is provided.

Should you have any questions regarding this matter, please do not hesitate to contact us.

Very truly yours, 3
