Docket No. 50-155 Mr. Kenneth W. Berry Director, Nuclear Licensing Consumers Power Company 1945 West Parnall Road Jackson, Michigan 49201

Dear Mr. Berry:

SUBJECT:

ENGINEERING EVALUATION OF SQUIB VALVE PRIMER AND TRIGGER ASSEMBLY INSERVICE DURATION (TAC 62985)

Re: Big Rock Point Plant By letter dated September 25, 1986, Consumers Power Cempany (CPC) provided NRC staff with a sumary of previous efforts and plans related to leaving the liquid Poison System squib primer and trigger assemblies in service beyond the manufacturers recomendation of 5 years.

In consideration of the temperature dependent degradation of the primer and triggerassemblies, theassurancethattheassemblieshaveremainedbelow 120 F because of continuous monitoring by thermocouples and a temperature recorder which alarns in the control room, and the manufacturer's written response documenting the 3 to 4 month useful life extension, NRC staff agrees with CPC's interpretation and plans to continue to operate until the January 1987 refueling outage.

NRC staff notes CPC's conservative interpretation of the 5-year service life of the primer and trigger assemblies in consideration of the Technical Specification 5.2.3 testing requirement of March 20, 1987.

Sincerely, j ohn A. Zwolinski, Director BWR Project Directorate #1
