Lear Sir:

This letter is written in opposition to the constmetion of a i nuclear power plant on Bodega Head by the Pacific Gas and Electrio ..

Company. The safety of the public would be endangered if there '  !

} should be an accident in which large amounts of. radiation would be released. Also when the plant will be in normal 9peration, a large amount of radioactive waste will diffuse over the surround-ing area. It is well known that this area contains many dairy f arms, and the radioactive waste would indirectly contaminate milk and other dairy products for a period of approximately four weeks, a time in which the radiation would decay to a safe level.

A warning notice could be sent out asking the public to ston all milk for four weeks before consumption. This would necessitate the acquisition of another refrigerator per family, which would consume more electric power, a situation which PG and E would certainly not oppose, um Even if the public is wamed of the dangere, mistakes will cer-tainly be made, with resulting loss of health and life. The Pacific Gas and Electric Company may call this new source of electric power a progressive step but to endanger the 1Arves of thousands of people cannot be c,alled pngress in agry sense of the word.

I urge you to take the safety of the public inte ocasideration as you take your decision.

Yours truly,

.v

  • DIR:CTE Docket No. 50-205- t DV 2 01963 1 Mr. David Wing Malibu, California i

Dear Mr. Wing:

This replies to your letter of October 24,1%3 addressed to i

Chairman Seaborg in which you expressed opposition to the nuclear power reactor proposed for construction at Bodega Head.

Public utilities choose the. sites for nuclear power reactors which they propose to build. The Atomic Energy Conmission then considers whether there is reasonable assurance that the pro-posed reactor can be constructed and operated at the proposed site without undue risk to the health and safety of the public.

In this regard, there is enclosed a pamphlet which describes the procedures relat ing to the licensing of power reactors by the Atomic Energy Coannission. : We believe that these procedures and their provision for public hearing will enable all. interested * ~ '

l persons to acquaint themselves with the details of Pacific Gas L. & Electric Company's proposal and will assure thorough considera-l tion of all aspects of the proposed plant bearing upon questions of health and safety. Disposal of. radioactive waste material and the nature of liquid and gaseous effluents are among the matters which are given careful consideration in the review of an application.

Sincerely yours, t
