l

Dear Commission Chairman and Commission Members:

We strongly oppose the modification of safety rules so as to enable the Shorham and Seabrook Nuclear Power Plants to start up operations.

To pursue such an action is to abdicate your responsibi-lity as a protector of the safety of populations exposed to radiation in time of accidents.

These accidents do occur as everyone knows of Three-Mile Island and Chernobyl and are likely to occur again in one of the plants you certify safe if you do not take seriously your responsibility for plant safety.

We applaud Commissioner James Asselstine for his integrity in voting against the rule change because his judgment correctly looks after the interests of the Commission and its responsibility to be above any manipulations to weaken the rules for safe compliance with these dangerous nuclear l . furnaces.

Sincerely, Ms, % A ane John & Eva Hardiman CC Sen. Claiborne Pell Sen John Chafee Sen tiarren B. Rudman
