By letters dated March 3 and March 7,1985 and the Updated Safety Analysis Report dated March 17, 1988, you provided information concerning implementation i of the subject rule at your f acility. By letters dated July 12, 1988 and January 31, 1989, you responded to the staff's requests for additional information dated June 9 and August 15, 1988, respectively, concerning the Standby Liquid Control System (SLCS) at Perry and how that system meets the requirements of 10 CFR 50.62. Included in your January 31, 1989 letter was a commitment to perform a 2-pump test of the SLCS at a total system flow of 1 82.4 gpm against full reactor operating pressure prior to the end of the first '

refueling outage, currently in progress.

We have completed our review of your submittals. Our detailed Safety Evaluation is enclosed. Based upon our review (and pending acceptable completion of the above SLCS test), we have determined that the alternate rod  ;

injection design, automatic recirculating pump trip design and SLCS design are )

in compliance with 10 CFR 50.62. We request that you notify us of the results of the SLCS performance test when completed.
