The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) staff conducted a series of conference calls with Entergy Nuclear Operations, Inc., (Entergy) regarding the Pilgrim license renewal application (LRA) to discuss Pilgrim Request for Additional Information (RAI) B.1.16.1 -the Region I discovery of water on the torus room floor. The conference calls were conducted on Wednesday February 28, 2007, between 3:00 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. and Thursday March 1, 2007 between 3:00 and 3:30 at 11555 Rockville Pike, Rockville, MD 20852. The list of participants is shown in the enclosure. The following is a summary of the conference call.

Both calls followed the same format with the Division of License Renewal Division Director introducing the staff and the Entergy personnel being introduced. On February 28, Entergy provided a theory that identified the source of the water in the torus room including some detail of the relative elevations of the base mat and the local water table. The staff then requested Entergy address the original base mat design criteria in a follow up call on March 1, 2007. On March 1, Entergy provided information regarding the design criteria of the base mat. To progress toward resolution of RAI B.1.16.1, the staff then requested Entergy provide specific information regarding the location of the water, related monitoring programs, Intermediate Staff Guidance and reactor drywell sand bed drains.

The applicant had an opportunity to comment on the meeting summary.

SUMMARY

OF CONFERENCE CALLS ON FEBRUARY 28, 2007, AND MARCH 1, 2007, WITH ENTERGY NUCLEAR OPERATIONS, INC., REGARDING THE PILGRIM LICENSE RENEWAL APPLICATION (TAC NO. MC9669)

The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) staff conducted a series of conference calls with Entergy Nuclear Operations, Inc., (Entergy) regarding the Pilgrim license renewal application (LRA) to discuss Pilgrim Request for Additional Information (RAI) B.1.16.1 - the Region I discovery of water on the torus room floor.
