OF CONFERENCE CALLS ON APRIL 2, 2007, WITH ENTERGY NUCLEAR OPERATIONS, INC., REGARDING THE PILGRIM LICENSE RENEWAL APPLICATION (TAC NO. MC9669)

The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) staff conducted a series of conference calls with Entergy Nuclear Operations, Inc., (Entergy) regarding the Pilgrim license renewal application (LRA) to discuss Pilgrim Safety Evaluation Report (SER) Open Item (01) 3.0.3.3.2.

The conference calls were conducted on Monday April 2, 2007, between 10:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. at 11555 Rockville Pike, Rockville, MD 20852. The list of participants is shown in the enclosure. The following is a summary of the conference calls.

The NRC Pilgrim Project Manager provided a brief introduction and then the staff was able to discuss with Entergy remaining questions regarding the possibility of refueling pool water leaking onto the reactor drywell shell. The staff also discussed with Entergy the need to make commitments to evaluate torus anchor bolts and grout and the need to confirm the 50 and 100 year flood plans do not impact the torus and surrounding equipment. Entergy described the inspections performed during outages to ensure any water leakage is documented and that no leakage has ever been documented. Entergy also discussed the welded construction of the refueling bellows. Entergy agreed that commitments should be made consistent with their recent Torus Base Mat Performance Evaluation recommendations and that they will confirm the flood plan impact on the plant.

The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) staff conducted a series of conference calls with Entergy Nuclear Operations, Inc., (Entergy) regarding the Pilgrim license renewal application (LRA) to discuss Pilgrim Requests for Additional Information (RAI) B.1.16.1 - the Region I discovery of water on the torus room floor and to discuss neutron fluence. The conference calls were conducted on Wednesday March 14, 2007, between 2:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. and Thursday March 15, 2007 between 1:30 and 2:00 at 11555 Rockville Pike, Rockville, MD 20852. The list of participants is shown in the enclosure. The following is a summary of the conference call.

During the March 14 call the Director of the Division of License Renewal discussed the staff concern with the lack of detail offered by Entergy in Pilgrim License Renewal Application Amendment 15 of March 13, 2007 as it relates to groundwater in the torus room. During the March 15 call, Entergy discussed a method being considered to resolve Pilgrim Safety Evaluation Report Open Item 4.2. This discussion was a follow up to the conference call that took place on February 26, 2007. The staff will issue a formal Request for Additional Information related to Open Item 4.2.
