Dear Commissioner Baran,

I live within five miles of Pilgrim and many of my friends are within the ten mile EPZ. So it was a rude shock-predictable, expected but nevertheless rude-to read the rollout of the NRC's new regulations regarding emergency procedures during decommissioning. And to realize just what that means for those us in the vicinity of Pilgrim .

Then I read your dissenting opinion . It restores my faith that there are sentient beings in the NRC. (Not enough of them, to be sure. How I wish you were not the minority.)

It is clear to everyone in Massachusetts-from Maura Healey to Senator Markey to all our elected representatives, and to us citizens-that something is terribly wrong at the NRC.

We see that the NRC serves the interests of the nuclear industry.

There can be no other explanation for cutting corners on safety when dealing with the most toxic substance on earth.

It is obvious that safety is at odds with corporate profits. Every penny spent on safety is a penny lost to profit. We are not fools. We get that.

What's also obvious is that for the most part, the NRC profoundly doesn't care. They have other masters to serve.

But you do care, it seems. And that restores my faith a tiny bit. So I thank you from the bottom of my heart.
