Dear Mr. Opeka:

SUBJECT:

ENVIRONMENTAL QUALIFICATION OF ELECTRIC EQUIPMENT IMPORTANT TO SAFETY Re: Millstone Nuclear Power Station, Unit No. 1 We have completed our evaluation of your February 11, 1985 and earlier submittals responsive to the bulletins and orders noted in our safety evaluation.

On the basis of the information you have provided, we have concluded that the Millstone Unit 1 electrical equipment environmental qualification program complies with the requirements of 10 CFR 50.49, that continued operation until completion of your environmental qualification program will not present undue risk to the public health and safety, and that your proposed resolutions for each of the environmental qualification deficiencies identified in our December 13, 1982 safety evaluation are acceptable.

However, the calculated containment pressure / temperature profiles remained as a significant open items. In this regard, you have indicated (your February 11, 1985 submittal) your intention to continue efforts, if necessary, to demonstrate conclusively the adequacy of the pressure / temperature profiles you have used for environmental qualification of safety-related electrical equipment. By [[letter::A04590, Responds to NRC 850111 Request for Addl Info Re NUREG-0737, TMI Item II.D.1 Concerning Performance Testing of Relief & Safety Valves,Selection of Transients & Valve Inlet Conditions,Valve Operability & thermal-hydraulic Analysis|letter dated June 11, 1985]], you responded to our request for further information relating to containment pressure / temperature accident profiles and schedular commitments. We find your response acceptable.

The staff's safety evaluation is presented as an enclosure to this letter.

Sincerely. -
