J f OYSTER CREEK NUCLEAR GENERATING STATION Forked River, New Jersey 08731 Licensee Event Report Reportable Occurrence No. 50-219/82-33/03L Report Date July 13, 1982 Occurrence Date i June 13,1982 Identification of Occurrence The "A" CRD pump was taken out of service due to excessive vibration and a

, decrease in discharge pressure. This condition resulted in operation in a l degraded mode pennitted by a limiting condition for operation as specified

] in the Technical Specifications, paragraph 3.4.D.2.

This event is considered to be a reportable occurrence as defined in the Technical Specifications, paragraph 6.9.2.b.2.

Conditions Prior to Occurrence The plant was operating at steady state power.

Power: Reactor 1594 MWt Ge nerator 538 MWe Description of Occurrence On June 10, 1982, while performing.a routine surveillance of the CRD pump in operation, "A" CRD pump was observed to be vibrating abnormally.

"A" CRD pump operation was then monitored by Engineering so further vibration i testing and operational checks could be performed.

On June 13, 1982, Plant Engineering recommended, based upon evaluation of pump
- data, that "A" CRD pump be removed from service. "B" CRD pump was placed in
service.

Appparent Cause of Occurrence The exact cause of the failure has not been determined. The component that failed was the rotating assembly of the pump. The pump appeared to have lost capacity due to an enlarging of the interstage bushing clearances in the rotating assembly.

Licensee Event Report ._ _

Page 2 Reportable Occurrence No. 50-219/82-33/03L Analysis of Occurrence The CRD pump supplies control rod drive cooling water, accumulator charging and rod maneuvering pressure as well as make-up water to the reactor core. For pipe break sizes up to 0.002 f t2, the flow from a single control rod drive pump is adequate for' maintaining the reactor vessel water level above the core, thus alleviating the need for actuation of -the. Auto Depressurization System and core spray initiation. As the redundant pump remained operable while repairs were made, the safety significance is considered minimal.

Corrective Action The immediate corrective action was to replace the failed rotating assembly with a new rotating assembly.

As a result of a previous, similar reportable occurrence, an engineering evaluation is being performed on the CRD system operating conditions. Based on the results of this evaluation, further corrective action will be determined.
