Report Date July-14, 1982 Occurrence Date June 18, 1982 Identification of Occurrence Due to an inadequacy in the implementation of procedural controls, Core Spray Pump "A" was taken out of service for approximately 6 hours6.944444e-5 days <br />0.00167 hours <br />9.920635e-6 weeks <br />2.283e-6 months <br />. This led to operation in a degraded mode permitted by a limiting condition -for operation as specified in the Technical Specifications, paragraph 3.4.A.4.

, This event is considered to be a reportable occurrence per Technical Specifications, paragraphs 6.9.2.b.2 and 6.9.2.b.3.

Conditions Prior to Occurrence The reactor was in steady state operation.

Thermal Power: 1550 M.;t Electrical Power: 512 MWe Description of Occurrence While perfonning maintenance on Control Rod Drive (CRD) pump "A", mechanics noticed that water from the disassembled CRD pwnp "A" was overflowing from the temporary drain assembly onto the core spray pump "A" motor housing.

Apparent Cause of Occurrence While reassembling CRD pump "A" casing, mechanics noticed that the drain assembly placed beneath the pump casing could not sufficiently paso the leakage draining from the 3" pump suction piping. This water overflowed from the drain assembly onto core spray pump "A" directly beneath the work area. Concern was expressed over the possibility of water leakage onto electrical components of the core spray pump "A" motor. Core spray pump "A" was subsequently taken out of service as a precautionary measure.

Licensee Event Report Page 2 Reportable Occurrence No. 50-219/82-36/03L Analysis of Occurrence The core spray system utilizes two redundant loops with 4 pumps per loop to provide a supply of low pressure coolant in case of a pipe break in the reactor primary system.

The required surveillance was performed on the redundant pump and it was confirmed to be operable.

As the redundant pump in the loop, as well as the redundant loop, were operable, the safety significance is considered minimal.

Corrective Ac tion Core Spray Pump "A" was removed from service and excess moisture was removed from the motor housing. Electricians then performed a megger check of the -

insulation resistance of the "A" pump motor with satisfactory results. An operability check was satisfactorily performed prior to placing the pump back in service.

The appropriate maintenance procedures for the CRD pumps will be revised as required to assure proper system draining techniques are used to prevent a recurrence of this event. In addition, this event will be placed on the required teading list for mechanics to increase their awareness of the possible effect of maintenance on adjacent safety-related equipment.
