Subject: Inspection No. 50-317/85-03

This refers to the special safety inspection conducted by Dr. Jin W. Chung of

this office on March 4 - 15, 1985 at Calvert Cliffs Nuclear Power Plant, Unit 1,

, Lusby, Maryland of activities authorized by NRC License No. DPR-53 and to the

discussions of our findings held by Dr. Jin W. Chung with Mr. J. Tiernan and

other members .of your-staff at the conclusion of the inspection.

Areas examined during this inspection included systems selected from two accident

sequences documented in the Calvert Cliffs probabilistic risk assessment (NUREG/

~CR-3511). The equiptrent inspection focused on the availability of critical

components as evidenced by plant conditions and implementation of programs to

assure operability. In addition, this inspectio, examined the ability of the

Calvert Cliff staff to utilize procedures and equipment to recover from accident

sequences. These areas are described in the NRC Region I Inspection Report

which is enclosed'with this letter.

Within these area:, the inspection consisted of selective examinations of proce-

dures and representative records, interviews with personnel, and cbservation of

equipment and simulated activities by the inspector.

Within the scope of this inspection, no violations were observed.
