This -letter refers to the special inspection conducted by Messrs. H. J. Kaplan

and A. Loh.neier of this office on July 10 to' July 13, 1990 at the Calvert Cliffs

Nuclear Power Plant Units 1 and 2 in Lusby,: Maryland. The inspectors discussed

the findings of the' inspection with Mr. C. H. Cruse of your-. staff at the

Areas examined during this inspection are described in the NRC-inspection report

.which is enclosed with this. letter. Within these areas, the inspection consisted

of selective examinations of proce.dures and representative records, interviews

with-personnel, and observations by the inspectors.

The welding deficiencies discussed in this report vere self-identified and

appropriate corrective action was immediately taken to resolve them.

Even though

your timely action precludes the'need for any enforcement actions at this time,

these deficiencies indicate the need for an indepth review:of those aspects of

your welding program associated with the identified deficiencies. You are

requested to provide to the NRC within 30' days of receipt of this letter the-
