{{#Wiki_filter: UNITED STATES NUCLEAR REGULATORY COMMISSION WASHINGTON, D.C. 20555-0001 August 4, 2014 LICENSEE: Exelon Generation Company, LLC FACILITY: Byron Station, Units 1 and 2 Braidwood Station, Units 1 and 2 SUBJECT: SUMMARY OF TELEPHONE CONFERENCE CALL HELD ON JULY 16, 2014, BETWEEN THE U.S. NUCLEAR REGULATORY COMMISSION AND EXELON GENERATION COMPANY, LLC CONCERNING RESPONSES FOR REQUEST FOR ADDITIONAL INFORMATION B.2.1.31-1A PERTAINING TO THE BYRON STATION AND BRAIDWOOD STATION, LICENSE RENEWAL APPLICATION (TAC NOS. MF1879, MF1880, MF1881, MF1882) The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC or the staff) and representatives of Exelon Generation Company, LLC (Exelon or the applicant), held a telephone conference call on July 16, 2014, to discuss and clarify the applicant's response for request for additional information (RAI) B.2.1.31-1a concerning the Byron and the Braidwood Stations license renewal application. The staff required clarifying information regarding the ASME Section XI, Subsection IWF aging management program. It was unclear to the staff whether using a sample of high strength bolts that were already included in the existing IWF inspection sample would constitute a representative number of bolts such that there is reasonable assurance that aging of the entire population of high strength A490 bolts in IWF applications would be managed during the period of extended operation. The applicant stated that all of the referenced high strength bolts are on ASME Class 1 supports for each unit (i.e., the steam generators (SG), reactor coolant pumps (RCP), and the pressurizer). The applicant further stated that per the IWF code, the supports for one SG, one RCP, and the pressurizer are inspected for each unit at both Byron and Braidwood. All of the accessible bolts are inspected at each of these locations, which represent approximately 25 percent of the high strength ASTM A490 bolts for each unit since all units are 4-loop pressurized water reactors. The staff did not require further clarification. Enclosure 1 provides a listing of the participants. The applicant had an opportunity to comment on this summary. /RA/ Lindsay Robinson, Project Manager Projects Branch 1 Division of License Renewal Office of Nuclear Reactor Regulation Docket Nos. 50-454, 50-455, 50-456, and 50-457 Enclosure: | |||
