May 9, 2022 LICENSEE:
Constellation Energy Generation, LLC FACILITY:
Braidwood Station, Units 1 and 2, and Byron Station, Unit Nos. 1 and 2
SUBJECT:
SUMMARY
OF APRIL 4, 2022, MEETING BETWEEN THE U.S. NUCLEAR REGULATORY COMMISSION AND CONSTELLATION ENERGY GENERATION, LLC, REGARDING PERFORMANCE MONITORING OF PRESSURIZER WELDS (EPIDS L-2022-LRR-0035 AND 0036)
On April 4, 2022, an observation meeting was held between the staff of the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) and Constellation Energy Generation LLC (the licensee), via the Microsoft TEAMS meeting application. The purpose for this meeting was for the licensee to brief the NRC staff on its plans for performing performance monitoring of pressurizer welds.
The meeting was published on the NRCs public web page on March 31, 2022 (Agencywide Documents Access Management System (ADAMS) Accession No. ML22090A071). No handout material was provided.
A list of meeting attendees/affiliations is provided as an Enclosure to this meeting summary.
Summary The licensee explained its plans for inspecting seven welds in the Byron Station (Byron), Unit No. 2, pressurizer to demonstrate that the pressurizer welds are performing as described in technical report, Technical Bases for Inspection Requirements for [pressurized water reactor]
PWR Pressurizer Head, Shell-to-Head, and Nozzle-to-Vessel Welds, dated December 2019 (ADAMS Accession No. ML21021A271). The results of the Byron, Unit 2, weld inspections will be used to demonstrate that all the required pressurizer welds in Braidwood Station, Units 1 and 2 (Braidwood), and all the required pressurizer welds in Byron, Unit Nos. 1 and 2, are performing as expected.
The NRC staff asked questions to further understand the licensees plan and requested the licensee to provide in its supplement to its relief request dated May 12, 2021 (ADAMS Accession No. ML21133A297), specific details regarding the reasons for the seven samples and how unacceptable indications would cause increased sampling of welds. The meeting time expired before the NRC staff had finished its questioning. As a result, the NRC staff stated that a follow up meeting would be scheduled.
There were no final determinations or regulatory decisions made by the NRC staff during the meeting.
Public Participation No members of the public responded to the NRC staffs request for comments or questions and no meeting feedback forms were received.
